About Flumill
Where we come from
The Flumill technology is based on know-how from the Norwegian oil and gas industry.
Our vision
To develop, deliver and maintain our unique, patented and cost efficient technology in various markets for production of clean renewable energy on the terms of nature.
Our mission
To become a well recognised player in the green transition through technology for extracting energy from the natural flow of water with low impact on the nature.
-
Flumill AS was founded by the inventor Jan Inge Eielsen with a vision to develop turbine technology capable of harvesting kinetic energy from virtually any type of flowing water.
The founders of CSUB Karl Tore Pedersen and Jon Inge Brattekaas got involved in the development and brought in the expertise from the oil and gas sector and composite production, as well as the financial expertise needed to bring an idea from concept to a commercial product.
The technology was refined trough CFD simulations and tank testing, and the first prototype for testing of technology and simulation data was successfully tow tested in Norway before deployment at the seabed at EMEC in Orkney.
In the later years Flumill started to develop a floating solution designed for remote locations. This solution was successfully tank tested at Flow Wave in Edinburgh.
Today we have solutions for extracting energy from the natural flow of water on the seabed, surface, rivers, and shallow waters, where the core technology is our unique and patented helical turbine with our own control mechanism. The technology offers unique advantages when it comes to cost effective extraction of energy, efficient use of materials, and robustness, while being, fauna friendly.
Our primary focus is now on kinetic energy from rivers. The Flumill River Kinetic System aims to make river-based power production more accessible, enabling energy generation in new areas without permanent installations or disruption of river ecosystems.
Our History and Development
The Flumill system has been successfully developed from concept stage to deployment at sea
Concept (R&D)
The Flumill system is developed based on the management team’s background from the Oil & Gas industry and the composites industry. Based on several years of concept development, the commercialization and industrialization of the concept began 2009
Prototype
A Flumill prototype was developed in 2010, and extensive tank testing was conducted early 2011. Full scale CFD was carried out by two different companies with corresponding results. Analysis from the tank testing confirmed the CFD values
Part-scale at-sea demo
A Flumill device was successfully manufactured, and tow tested in Arendal in August 2011. The device was thereafter successfully installed at the EMEC test centre in the Orkneys in September 2011 – February 2012
Full-scale river pilot
A full scale grid connected pilot deployment of the Flumill River Kinetic System is planned to be carried out in a river in Norway. It will demonstrate the technology and connection to customer.
Commercial
In the near future Flumill expect to deploy a fully commercial kinetic river system and follow up with more technology for rivers and secondary hydro. Further down the line we see ourselves deploying tidal units and parks for various sites and markets.
Tank test January 2024
In January 2024, Flumill performed a comprehensive test of a 1:20 scale model of its newly developed floating system at the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility in Edinburgh (part of the University of Edinburgh). The system (comprising the platform, mooring, pivot and turbine), either met or exceeded expectations on all primary objectives of the tank test.
